Community Appreciation Awards

Do you know someone who has made a significant difference in the life of a newcomer immigrant? Or a business or organization who go out of their way to help welcome and help promote diversity and multiculturism in the Miramichi? 

The Miramichi Regional Multicultural Association is presenting three community appreciation awards. The awards are to recognize a business, an organization and an individual who have demonstrated exceptional and innovative efforts in welcoming and integrating newcomer immigrants to the Miramichi region.

 

Written nominations for any category are welcomed using the Appreciation Award nomination form available by contacting Ethel Sonier at ethel.sonier@mrma.ca or by dropping by the MRMA office.  Awards are announced and presented on Canadian Multiculturalism Day, 27 June at the annual MRMA Multicultural Dinner and Concert. The closing date for nominations is Friday, 15 June 2012. Please submit nominations to Ethel Sonier at the MRMA office (1808 Water Street, Miramichi) or by email to ethel.sonier@mrma.ca.


Gallery ARTcadienne

Dear Members and friends,

The Galerie ARTcadienne is pleased to present a new exhibition beginning on Sunday, 29 April 2012. It will show art by newcomers and people living in Miramichi with an ethnic background such as German, Indian, Philippino, Mikmaq, Scottish, Irish, French, etc. You will be able to see some nice pieces of art from a collector. This exhibition is organized with the collaboration of the Miramichi Regional Multicultural Association (MRMA).

The artists that will exhibit include:

Jason Bennett, Laura Comeau, Delta Hillyard, Patricia “Angel” Lagman, Vamsi Chava, Vanessa Pesch, Kerstin Pesch, Cheryl Savoie and Children (calendar)

Various mediums will be shown. This exhibition will be on until 27 May 2012. There is no fee to see this exhibition and the gallery is open 7 days a week, Monday to Friday 8:30 am till 10:00 pm. Saturday and Sunday 9:00 am till 5:00 pm. It is located at the Carrefour Beausoleil at 300 Beaverbrook Road, Miramichi.


VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT
 
Position: Program Assistant
Duration: 8 weeks

Remuneration: $10.00/hr. (35 hrs/week)

Background
The Miramichi Regional Multicultural Association (MRMA) raises public consciousness and acceptance of multiculturalism through the organisation and promotion of workshops, seminars, conferences, festivals and educational programs. Along with these multicultural promotion activities, MRMA provides settlement and integration services to newcomers. MRMA settlement services can include: translation and interpretation, assisting newcomers with documentation, and providing referrals to other community resources. The New Brunswick Department of Post-Secondary Education, Training and Labour, under the Student Employment and Experience Development Program have made resources available to MRMA to engage a summer student to provide employment and work experience. MRMA has need for the services of a student to assist with the identification and development of programs for newcomer youth; to promoting diversity among youth; and, to contribute to creating stronger linkages between youth and the community to instil a greater sense of belonging. This involves engaging youth in the history, culture, art and public life of the Miramichi Region.

Duties and Tasks Working under the direct day-to-day supervision of the Coordinator, and in coordination with the MRMA Program Officer, and in consultation with other organisations, the incumbent will carry out the following specific tasks:

1. Assist with planning and implementation of multicultural promotion activities;

2. Assist with reception of newcomers and programs in support of newcomers;

3. Focus upon engagement of young newcomers in multicultural promotion activities as well as promoting young newcomers participation in established programs in communities of the region;

4. Develop and deliver diversity program for young people in established summer programs; and,

5. Prepare reports on activities.


Qualifications and Experience
The incumbent must possess the following qualifications:
1. Community college or university student in Arts, Education, Recreation and Leisure Studies or Social Work;
2. Registered full-time student in an educational institution in the current academic year;
3. Attending a post-secondary institution in the fall of 2012;
4. Good English written and verbal communication skills;
5. Essential skills of being able to work with others, instructional materials development; activity coordination, working with youth, and writing;
6. Computer skills in use of Internet Explorer and MS Office;
7. Valid driver’s license; and,
8. Willingness and availability to occasionally work evenings and weekends as may be required.


Priority will be given to visible minorities.

Fluency in French and any other language will be an asset.
